Special Trains for the Candlelight Event...
During the Dunster by Candlelight event the remarkably preserved medieval village turns its back on the present and lights its streets with candles.
Avoid all the stress of trying to park and travel in style with the West Somerset Railway. There is a free courtesy bus to transfer you from Dunster Station to Dunster Village for the event.
To mark the beginning of the festival on Friday 2 December 2011 at 5.30pm there is the Lantern Lighting Procession that starts on the Steep and continues through the village until all the lanterns in the streets have been lit. The procession of children and their families is accompanied by colourful stiltwalkers in fantastic costumes who put up the lanterns.
During both evenings there are a variety of street entertainers who include carol cingers, morris dancers, handbell ringers, a brass band, a large fairground organ and choirs in the Parish Church. The atmosphere is both traditional and exciting, truly an event for all ages.
Most of Dunster's wide variety of shops are open throughout the two evenings for Christmas shopping and a range of restaurants and their street stalls offer a variety of foods.
Full information about the event can be found at the Dunster by Candlight website.
Every year the medieval village of Dunster turns back the clock and celebrates a traditional Christmas almost entirely lit by candlelight. A magical evening for all the family, with special train services to the event from Bishops Lydeard on 2 and 3 December.
By far the best way to beat the inevitable traffic jams is to travel to the event by train on the WSR, as special services are operated on both evenings.
Passengers have the choice of alighting at Dunster Station and walking to the village - about twenty minutes (please bring a torch) or travelling from Minehead Station by a special dedicated free bus service to the edge of Dunster. Please note wheelchair access to the bus connection cannot be guaranteed.
All outward trains depart from Bishops Lydeard then non-stop before setting down at Dunster and Minehead.
