The award-winning publication |

The Journal first appeared in 1978, and replaced the "Newsletter" which had previously kept members up to date with developments. The new publication included photographs and was made available to the general public. The first Editor was Allan Stanistreet, who is still very active on the Railway.
The Journal is published four times a year. Full colour photos appear front and back and centrefold, along with up to 30 black and white pics, some topical others historical.
There is news about the stations, locos, coaching stock, trackwork and lots more. Up to date news is included along with a letters page. Each Journal has several well-researched articles. A comprehensive information page ensures everyone knows who to contact.
The Editors between the first and current were Peter Cook, Graham Stagg, Peter Barnfield and Richard Jones.
The current Editor is David Williams, whose WSR Journal no 77 was awarded the D. Noel Draycott trophy for continued excellence in the 1997 AIRPS publications competition. And further success and recognition came in 2001 with the Journal winning first place in the Heritage Railways Association bi-annual competition for house magazines from associates having more than 500 members.
And yet more success! The WSRA scooped two major "industry" awards in the 2003 Heritage Railway Asscociation Publications Competition. The WSRA membership leaflet - a glossy well-illustrated colour effort - has gained the "Best Publicity Material", and the quarterly Journal has retained the "Steam Railway Trophy" for magazines with more than 500 circulation. The awards were presented on 31 January 2004.
