Norton Fitzwarren Junction averages two trains a day
In 2010, over 700 trains used the Junction between Network Rail and the West Somerset Railway. The staggering statistic confirms the belief and the vision of the various parties who in 2003 agreed to fund the improvements to Norton Fitzwarren Junction which have since allowed thousands of trains to work between the heritage line and the main line. Writing in the WSR Journal, Steve Martin, WSR's Operating Superintendent, explains "We started the year [2010] with High Output Ballast Cleaner (HOBC) trains to Allerford Junction and GBRF empty stock to Bishops Lydeard, and at the end of the year, the HOBC trains were still running and the WSR were again welcoming stone trains for sea defence works." On 17 December 2010, the WSR received no less than three freight workings from the main line - a HOBC, a stone train and a rail delivery train. Also using the link were several track maintenance trains, through passenger trains and main line steam locos for stabling and servicing. Perhaps the Junction is the most used between any heritage railway and the main rail network?

The Stogumber Goods Lock Up Project
A lost building could be rebuilt at Stogumber Station. The Friends of Stogumber Station have set their sights rebuilding the Goods Lock Up as the next major project for 2011. The Goods Lock Up was initially built at the same time as the station in 1862 in matching stone and this neat little building stood at the end of the cattle dock. In the last few years of its life it acted as a store for lamp oil for signals before eventually being demolished in the 1960s. The FoSS are trying to raise sufficient funds to reconstruct this building in the same style as it was built but using modern building techniques. When complete part will be opened as a goods agent's office and part will act as a store for the station stock. The WSR has never rebuilt a lost building so why not join in and support this venture.

The West Somerset Railway is pleased to announce that John Wilton has agreed to join the Company Board and take on the role of Personnel Director. The Railway have made this statement: "Many will know John as a guard but he has also been involved with the railway’s S&T Department, on the Buffets and as a TTI; he is also currently waiting to take the DMU Driving examination. Looking like a good year for the WSRA
A good financial report for the WSR Association looks likely. Don Bishop, Vice Chairman of the West Somerset Railway Association explains. "WSRA staff are currently working on the annual accounts, along with our auditors, and are pleased to be able to report that it looks like we've had a very good year with all of our trading departments - West Somerset Railway Promotions Ltd, recording successful results with donations and fund raising activities also being successful. This has enabled us to support a good number of projects on the WSR over the past year, such as work on stations including
- £4,500 to Watchet for the new toilet block,
- £2,622 to Stogumber towards the new waiting room,
- £2,000 to the Williton footbridge project,
- £1,000 also at Williton for the booking office chimney rebuild,
- £800 to Blue Anchor for reinstatement of gates,
- £1,000 for the rebuilding of a retaining wall at Watchet,
- £788 for platform lighting at Crowcombe, with another £2,000 committed for next year to convert the stations lamptops,
and all of our ongoing commitments to the cost of maintaining Bishops Lydeard station as the gateway to the railway for many of our visitors. We have also supported the WSR Plc with assistance on the cost of moving the Llangollen based Autocoach no 167 and GWR no 6024 King Edward I to the Railway for the Spring Steam Gala and £10,000 towards the new volunteer accommodation block at Minehead. Signal & Telegraph and Permanent Way works are also of course supported on an ongoing basis. All of this of course is in addition to our current major project to build the turning triangle at Norton Fitzwarren, which is progressing well and will hopefully be completed and passed ready for use later in 2011, along with further work around the Norton Platform. We are continuing to develop our Williton works facility in order to provide capacity to overhaul the Association's Small Prairie no 4561, and in the future Manor no 7821 Ditcheat Manor when funds are available, plus the WSRA's own coaching stock that has been bought over the years for service on the WSR, some of which is now requiring major overhaul, and undertaking contract work for a number of clients both directly involved with the WSR and outside, such as recent work on West County no 34046 Braunton and GWR no 6960 Raveningham Hall. There are numerous projects going on at the WSR all the time (and I hope I have not missed anything important) and the WSRA is proud to be able to support the railway with many of these. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our hard working staff, both paid and voluntary, and our members and supporters for their donations etc. to enable all of the above and more to take place in the past year and look forward to other projects that are in the pipeline for the coming year."

RAMS help out at Stogumber Station
With a little help from friends from RAMS. Jenny Davidge, Station Master at Stogumber, explains "I wish to send my sincere thanks to John Baines and all the RAMS people. Despite heavy rain delaying John's already busy schedule he managed to stop off at Stogumber Station and fit the last sign. This proclaims 'Tickets and Refreshment Room' from over the station building door. Without RAMS help SR would be a much poorer place with regards to its buildings. To add icing on the cake the Waiting Room has been finished off with posters.Well done RAMS keep up the good work."

The final fundraising push for Williton's footbridge
Help finish the Williton footbridge. Williton's new Station Master Martin Hope will be asking visitors over the coming Spring Steam Gala to help with the £20,000 needed to finish off the footbridge. Fundraising over many years at the station have raised the funds for the refurbishment and re-erection of the ex-Trowbridge GWR footbridge and funds are available to add the timber steps and deck to have the footbridge in use, hopefully for the summer. However a further £20,000 is needed to add the roof and lighting to protect the bridge before the winter weather sets in. Martin commented that "This was Chris van den Arend's great project which he led with quiet tenacity for so many years and we are all so disappointed that he was not there to see the bridge erected. A donation to complete the footbridge would be a fitting tribute to the memory of one of the founding generation of the WSR."
Donations can be given to station staff or sent to Williton Station. Cheques should be made payable to 'Williton Station Footbridge Fund'.

Successful trial for proposed chicane at Govier's Lane Crossing
Watchet residents are pleased with the proposed changes to the footpath crossing. The Railway, along with local residents and local authorities, constructed on the car park in Harbour Road a mock-up of the revised plans for Govier's Lane Crossing. The new arrangement will takes the form of a fenced chicane on each side of the railway track. The current gates would be removed. Local people who were invited to test the chicanes with pushchairs, cycles, wheelchairs, mobility scooters - and even a postman's trolley was seen negotiating the chicane. The result was general approval. It was good to see the Railway managers working directly with folks on access issues. The next step is to submit the plan to the Office for the Railway Regulator for approval to proceed and everyone is hopeful of swift progress at Govier's Lane. A video of the trial can be seen on WizzerTV.

A new Station Master and a new footbridge
Following interviews, Martin Hope has been appointed as the new Station Master at Williton. Announcing the news Magda Davies of the WSRA said "Congratulations to Martin and good luck for the future." The announcement came on the day when the ex-Trowbridge footbridge was returned from Cardiff following renovation at Tema Engineering and lifted into position across the tracks and platforms at Williton recreating the look familiar in former days. A fitting tribute to the late Chris van den Arend, long serving Williton Station Master, who died in December last year, and who was the driving force behind the footbridge project. New Station Master Martin, the man behind the excellent revamped Williton Station website, commented on his new appointment "I am looking forward to the challenge of leading the team at Williton Station and hope that the 'apprenticeship' I undertook working as a volunteer on the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway will stand me in good stead in my new position"

Trains requested not to stop at Stogumber
By popular request certain up trains on each Saturday and Sunday of the Spring Steam Gala will not stop at Stogumber. Station visitors will enjoy the rare chance to see, hear and photograph or film a train working very hard at line speed running non-stop and uphill through a station. Normally this type of photograph can only be obtained from a run past associated with a photographic charter. However the requests have been such that for this Gala again certain up trains will not stop. With the long garden at Stogumber getting a good position is not difficult and some memorable photographs can be obtained especially in the morning. The non-stoppers, all from the Minehead direction, pass Stogumber Station at 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. Stogumber will be a hive of activity with the usual photographers, who know the secrets of the station, being there early. Lydia's famous cakes will be on sale along with bacon rolls, pasties and sausage rolls served piping hot. Gallons of tea, coffee and other beverages available. And possibly the best selection of second hand railway books for miles.

Some changes to the Spring Steam Gala programme
A Gala update from the Special Events Planning Team. The Railway is very disappointed to have been advised by the owners of Braunton that the loco will not be available for the first weekend of the Gala. GWR 2-6-2T no 4160 will substitute. On Wednesday 23 March GWR 0-6-0PT no 6430 with Autocoach no 167 will be in traffic along with BR 4-6-2 no 70000 Britannia and be sure to look out for a heritage freight movement from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard at some time during the day. The Norton Shuttles will run on the Saturday and Sunday of each Gala weekend from Bishops Lydeard to the platform at Norton Fitzwarren and then onto the WSR/NR boundary and back. Passengers may alight and re-board the train at Norton Platform but it will not be possible to leave the platform. Due to engineering problems Kilmersdon will not be available to perform shunting demonstrations at Washford. However, there will be shunting demonstrations at Dunster on Saturday and Sunday of the first weekend and Saturday of the second weekend. The next arrivals at Williton will be...
Two railway heritage artefacts will arrive soon at Williton Station on the West Somerset Railway. First to arrive will be the ex-Trowbridge footbridge following refurbishment at Tema Engineering Ltd in Cardiff. It will be erected on site on 16 and 17 March. For much of the Station's history, a footbridge has graced the scene at Williton Station and it will be sadly noted by many that the originator of the footbridge project, Chris van den Arend who passed away so recently, will not see the culmination of this work. Next to arrive, probably sometime in April, is ex-GWR BCK no 6705. Colin Worrall and Walt Denning have completed their work at Crewe on the woodwork and metalwork of this coach which was shunted out of its scaffolding shelter on 8 March 2011. The West Somerset Steam Railway Trust plans to bring the coach to Williton for completion of fitting out, refurbishing the running gear, and painting.

A round up of news snippets
Paul Conibeare, WSR General Manager, provided updates on a few projects at the recent Liaison meeting. These snippet of news are in no particular order:
- Braunton will work the Gala then start mainline test runs with its support coach. About the start of May a ten coach rake of coaches will be delivered to the Railway by diesel for its fully loaded test run.
- King Edward 1 has a boiler extension until March next year and when this expires it is hoped the overhaul will take place at Williton.
- A locomotive renaming day is planned for June during the summer to recognise the sacrifices made by 40 Commando Royal Marines in Afghanistan recently. This is in the final planning stages but everybody involved at Norton Manor Camp will be given a free VIP day out on the Railway and free entertainment at Minehead by Butlins on the following day.
- Butlins have confirmed the visit of the Red Arrows for 10 August. The Railway need to be operating ten coach rakes to a revised timetable.
- Following his recent visit to the WSR, the Transport Minister has agreed to write to First Great Western asking that when their franchise expires, the Railway wishes to run a new Park and Ride service, to be run from Bishops Lydeard, Norton Fitzwarren and Taunton.
- Negotiations are ongoing about leasing the car park at Bishops Lydeard from Taunton Deane Council. When concluded the Railway plans to introduce a paid parking scheme with a suggested fee £2.50 per day.
- The Camping Coach at Minehead will be replaced by a purpose-built accommodation block.
- The WSRA plan to extend the Bishops Lydeard shop and move the Café to an adjacent building has cancelled.
- The plan to extend the passing loop at Williton (to allow for ten coach trains) will go-ahead as part of the 2011 appeal to members for funds.
We hope to expand on the above as and when further information comes in.

Updated information leaflet for disabled visitors
The Railway has updated and re-issued advice for disabled visitors. The Access Policy was reviewed during the winter months with very little change noted. Although a revised Disabled Access Leaflet has been produced, the Access Statement itself has been taken offline during the revamp of the official WSR website. At present the Railway continues to limit travel for certain wheelchairs and mobility scooters and persists with the maximum dimensions as laid down by regulations for new build trains, although the Railway does say if a wheelchair is oversize for medical reasons, except weight, then a permit to travel may be issued if applied for in advance. Online ticketing, event news, train times, fares, travel information and much more. All can be found at the all-new West Somerset Railway website. Improved grouping of key areas of interest, such as "Find Us", "Timetables" and "Events", under slick drop-down menu buttons, make it easy to find the right page, quickly. Four Class 59 locomotives for Mixed Traction Weekend
The Mixed Traction event in June is likely to be sponsored by Mendip Rail. The sponsorship will help positively mark the 25th Anniversary of the introduction of their Class 59 diesel electric locomotives into service on British Rail. On the first day, Friday 10 June 2011 it is planned that two Class 59s with a rake of the latest stone wagons will arrive from Merehead in time to work this modern day freight to Minehead. Coming the other way will be a heritage diesel locomotive with a heritage freight train and the pair will cross at Williton. Later that morning a Class 59 hauled passenger train from Bishops Lydeard will convey invited guests who were involved with the launch of the Class 59s to a ceremony to be held at Minehead before an informal reception off the Railway. Then on Saturday morning two more 59s will arrive - a quartet of the big General Motors machines on the Saturday and Sunday, a first on a heritage railway.
